The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
