The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
